Summer Registration Time

I have set up a registration on the schedule for this coming Friday. Just log on and register to attend or not attend, meaning playing or not playing outdoor this year. Ignore most of it as it's meaningless other than I want to know who wants to play Outdoor soccer this year.

Big Win for Stars

The indoor season has begun. After 2 exhibition games the Stars are currently sitting with a win and a loss. The team is very excited with new additions to the team and an unbeleivable facility in which to play.

The biggest story of the year to date however was last night's win. During the past outdoor season the 2 top teams in First Division were Red River Action, bolstered by Premier players joining after having played with Sweat Shack, and Brazil FC. The latter is a very strong side on it's way to Premier having worked their way through the ranks since joing the WWSL. Brazil FC is a young team of former youth premier players.

Last night the Stars defeated Brazil FC 2-1 in a very intense and well played game. Venus Stewart accounted for both goals and outstanding defence bolstered by the goaltending Chelsea Richter contributed to the win. The Stars had never beaten Brazil FC, having lost in a blow-out once and a close 3-1 game in the last outdoor season.

Stars lost 2-1 to Red River Action in the first game of the season, but put on a strong effort in a game that could have gone either way. Having played the 2 top teams in the Division the Stars have a renewed confidence for success in the First Division for the remainder of the season.

Stars play next on Monday November 24 at 9:30. They take on Brunswick Sting at the new Indoor Soccer Facility at the U of M. Come and see this state of the art facility and a strong, motivated Stars squad, set to do great things this season.

Tough 11 Score Win over Legends

After a tough first half the MJ Stars have won 2 in a row in typical Stars fashion. Dominating the game with ball control but having trouble finishing the scoring opportunities. Tonight's game was made even more difficult with no substitutes available. The tough 11 who showed put on another display of dominant play only to squeak by the Legends by a 2-1 score. Jill Heater scored both goals for the Stars while Venus Stewart, playing a very strong game had many opportunities but was unable to find the twine.

Next up for the Stars is Nova, on Wednesday July 16 at the Maples Community Club. They are playing excellent tough soccer these days and once the finish comes they will be tough to beat.

Mid Season Report

It's been a trying season to date for the Stars. After 10 games we are sitting at a .500 record with 4 wins, 4 losses and 2 ties. Two losses have been substantial however FC Brazil and Red River Action are very powerful sides. We've struggled with our defensive alignment and both teams exploited the weaknesses severely. It appears that this issue has been corrected and in the last game and a half the defence has performed admirably. The coaches agree that it is important to have the right people in the right place and some experiementation on their part has lead to significant difficulties.

There has been some departures from the team for a variety of reasons. Ramona Rohringer, long time team member and keeper chose to leave the team due to many family and other commitments which effect her ability to focus on the soccer team. We wish her well for a happy and relaxing summer. Ashley B. has also chosen to leave the team for similar reasons and hopes to rejoing for the indoor season.

The summer brings the MSA Cup. We've not yet recieved our schedule for this tournament however it should be out soon. Check this space for the dates when they arrive.

To conclude, the first half is over and after some trials and tribulations the MJ Stars seem to be pulling together and look forward to an even better second half of the season. The addition of new players has certainly added to the talent pool however it is just now that signs of team play are evident.

Outdoor Season Begins!

The outdoor season has begun and the stars are getting back into the groove of things. The girls have had 4 back to back games and have been trying different formations to see what works best for the team.
Their first game against Black Magic was an unfortunate loss. The score was 3-2 Venus scoring both goals making it a close game. The second game against St. James Legends the ladies tried a new formation. It was a rough start but we came back in the end to tie up the game 2-2, Jill scoring both goals. The third game the weather was a factor. It was extremly cold and windy but the stars sucked it up and played a hard game. The ladies tied 1-1 Venus scoring the goal.
The most recent game against SSC our rival team was a very exciting game! Stars came out strong scoring the first goal by Erika, but SSC answered right back and tied it up. It was a very physical game but In the end Kristen, former SSC player, ended the game by scoring the winning goal making the score 2-1! The next game is this sunday lets keep up the good work ladies!!

Practice Time Change

Because of the long weekend we had decided to move the practice from Sunday to Monday. Our usual schedule is 7 pm on the weekend and 6 during the weekday, and therefore I had made the error on the schedule, indicating that practice was at 6. We will practice at 7 on Monday as it is still the weekend. Gives you a chance to get back from wherever you are. And Happy Birthday to our twins on that day. We hope they get to practice.

Season Schedule Posted

All Games for the 2008 season have been posted on the website. All practices have been scheduled and you will be notified via the website one week in advance. The date are May 12 and 19 as we have 4 games in a row, June 4,8 and 25, July 6,9,13,20,27 and 30, however we will have a MSA Cup game in 2 of the weeks where we have no games scheduled, August 4 (Monday of the long weekend) 10,17 and 24.

It's a fairly intensive schedule when you add in the Cup game(s). But we are keeping to the Sunday-Wednesday schedule except for the 4 games we have on Mondays. Most of those weeks we won't practice on the Sunday.

It is extremely important that we have good attendance at the next 2 practices (12&19) so that we can be ready for the 4 games in a row. We need to get our formation together and get to know each other as a team. After the practice on the 12th I would like all of us to go to Alfie's for a drink and to discuss more of how we'll play the game on Wednesday. Let's give it all we have Ladies!

Final Statistics

The first thing is we are having our first outdoor practice tomorrow, Thursday April 17, 2008, 6:00 at Kildonan Park. The first open space to your right as you enter the park. Please rsvp if you can or can not make it!

As for our indoor season, it was, by the standings on the WWSL website, a tremendously successful season. We finished in second place, tied in points with 2 other teams at 31 points for the most in the league. T-Devils were awarded first with more wins (9) to our (8) and we were awarded second by virtue of our record against SSC and our +/-. Overall, what stands out was that we allowed the fewest goals in the league, thanks to Mona’s goaltending and our strong defense. By the same token our offense was sixth in the division. Improving our offence would therefore be the target for coming seasons. Thank you Ladies for a great season.

Stars Continue to Shine

The Maples Juventus Stars defeated Black Magic on Saturday Jan. 12, 2008 by a score of 3-1. It was a sluggish effort as the Stars trailed Black Magic 1-0 after the first half. Former Star, Faren Hochman scored the lone Black Magic Goal. In the second half the Stars came to life with a single goal from Tina Pilz and 2 from Lana Hochman. Her 2 goal performance gave the Stars the win as well as giving her bragging rights at home. The Hochman sisters performed at an extra high level with family in the crowd.

The win allows the Stars to maintain their one point lead in the First Division. Their next game is against second place SSC United, their arch rival.
